Listening to life: Sonification for enhancing discovery in biological research.

Sonification, or the practice of generating sound from data, is a promising alternative or complement to data visualization for exploring research questions in the life sciences. Expressing or communicating data in the form of sound rather than graphs, tables, or renderings can provide a secondary information source for multitasking or remote monitoring purposes or make data accessible when visualizations cannot be used. While popular in astronomy, neuroscience, and geophysics as a technique for data exploration and communication, its potential in the biological and biotechnological sciences has not been fully explored. In this review, we introduce sonification as a concept, some examples of how sonification has been used to address areas of interest in biology, and the history of the technique. We then highlight a selection of biology-related publications that involve sonifications of DNA datasets and protein datasets, sonifications for data collection and interpretation, and sonifications aimed to improve science communication and accessibility. Through this review, we aim to show how sonification has been used both as a discovery tool and a communication tool and to inspire more life-science researchers to incorporate sonification into their own studies.

Terracing as an Old-Style Scheme of Soil Water Preservation in Djingliya-Mandara Mountains- Cameroon

The relief and high population densities of ≥150 inhabitants/Km2in the Mandara Mountains and the drastic displacement of internally displaced persons towards these Mountains have brought about severe effects on water and soil resources. This environmental and socio-political crisis, have made agricultural production not to meet demand for food and hundreds of these rural people go hungry each day. This has constrained the inhabitants to develop various tactics of soil water preservation and landscape restoration towards fighting deficiencies in crop production to ensure food security. This study analyzes terracing as a traditional system of soil water conservation adopted by the farmers in Djingliya villages found on the Mandara Mountains. Through secondary source of information, field observation, interviews and questionnaires administered on 100 persons in five villages of the study area, results show that: soil degradation via soil resources overuse and erosion is checked by terraces. Also, the tendency of adopting local techniques is harnessed through the cultivation of plants which increase infiltration, agroforestry, crop rotation practices, Forest Landscape Conservation, Mosaic Landscape Restoration and Valorizing Local Plant Species to ensure sustainable farming activities that restore degraded land in general and terraces in particular.

Research methodology For the design of this case study, the authors used primary sources of information from the shops visited by them in preparation of the case and website of Fred Perry and secondary sources of information from both academic and journalistic publications. Case overview/synopsis Fred Perry is a premium clothing brand, well-known for its polo shirts. It was created by Mr Fred Perry, a British tennis player. The brand’s stated values are integrity, personality and individuality. Throughout its history, the brand has been adopted by different British subcultures but recently it has faced a challenge because of the brand appropriation by the Proud Boys, a US far-right white supremacy group and other extremist groups as Antifa and hooligans. The nature and actions of the group mean that Fred Perry runs the risk of losing control over its brand equity. This brand hijack means that Fred Perry risks alienating some of its customers by openly opposing the group but also by embracing this subculture’s appropriation. Practically, the brand opposed the appropriation in a press release and by putting an end to the sale of the black and yellow polo shirts in the USA and Canada. Fred Perry has also made a lot of efforts to reposition the brand away from extremist groups while maintaining its strong historical and cultural roots. Through this case study, students will have the opportunity to discuss this topic and explore solutions for brands that face this type of dilemma. Complexity academic level This case is designed to be used in a marketing management, brand strategy or consumer behavior/culture course, especially in the subfield of market segmentation in the telecommunications sector. Specifically, this case is designed for college seniors or master students with basic strategic marketing training. This case will help students understand the difference between the brand identity that the brand owners intend and the brand image that consumers actually perceive. It provides the basis of discussions on the topics of brand management, consumer culture, consumers-brands relationships, brand architecture, brand equity, brand appropriation and repositioning strategy.

The Formal Seed System of Maize in Ethiopia: Implications for Reducing the Yield Gap

Smallholder farmers’ access to and use of quality seeds of improved varieties and hybrids is an integral component of sustainable maize production and the reduction of the yield gap in Ethiopia. Formal seed supply systems play a pivotal role in ensuring farmers’ access to good quality seed and increasing the productivity of maize. However, the contribution of the formal seed system to the increase in the average national maize yield in the country is not well documented. This paper specifically analyzes the formal seed supply systems and contributions of improved seed to maize productivity increase in Ethiopia. Secondary sources of information, including published and unpublished data, were used. Analysis of the seed value chain from research to commercial seed producers indicated that public and private maize hybrids dominate the formal seed system. Increased use of improved seed and associated management practices has contributed to the yield increase at the national level. For every 10,000 MT of additional maize-improved seed used by smallholder farmers, the national average maize yield increased by 400 kg per hectare (R sq. = 0.59). Hence, in addition to other yield-increasing technologies and extension support, ensuring the availability of improved seed to farmers can significantly contribute to reducing the maize yield gap between the national average yield and the average yield from on-farm demonstrations already attained by farmers in Ethiopia. Various policy interventions are suggested to improve the maize seed system performance and increase the supply of maize improved seeds.

Necessity of Big Data Security and its Relation to National Security

Many government organizations like the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Department of Passport, Public Service Commission, Department of Transport Management, Election Commission of Nepal, hospitals, etc. are increasingly relying on data-centric services as the stored data helps to deliver the services effectively and efficiently. Such services are widespread due to increased internet usage, mobile devices, and network-based activities. The rapid expansion of technology usage has led to a corresponding shift in governance towards data-driven services. While adopting the data-driven services it brings forth a critical concern about the security and maintaining confidentiality of the citizens. The paper analyzes the existing policies, laws, and bylaws pertaining to data security and protection. It explores the challenges that exist for data security and protection. Furthermore, the paper identifies the necessity of big data security and its impact on national security due to data theft and breaches. The study has been undertaken by the use of secondary sources of information. While undertaking the research, the paper has delved into secondary sources; encompassing government policies, acts, regulations, reports and directives, international research articles, and views of cyber security experts. The paper has underscored the necessity of big data security measures and has identified the consequences that could be caused due to the inadequate security measures of the data as well as highlighted the importance of data privacy. The study contributes to the broader discourse on protecting data and its relation to national security.

The Public Budget’ Coverage of the Electoral Campaigns and Elections (2017-2024) and the Prevention of the Abuse of State Resources for Free and Fair Elections in Albania

This paper aims to analyze the use of public budgets to finance the electoral process, including electoral campaigns and elections of the political parties, candidates and other electoral subjects. The focus in this paper is in organizing free and fair elections, by preventing the abuse of the state resources, considered as one of the main deficiencies of the new democracies, including Albania from the year 1991- onward. The abuse of state resources, as an important feature of political finance, focuses on the problems resulting from the undue influence of the incumbent political party that wants to stay in power as long as possible. It is related with the funds or other resources, gained by political parties and candidates that benefit the incumbent party, and it results in undue influence of the later, and prevents other political parties and candidates from having a fair electoral contest. The main research question of this paper is: what are the programs and activities that are funded by the public (national) budgets related with the parliamentary and local elections and what are the financing’ regulations and their effects? Also, does the government create a fair starting point for all of the political parties and candidates, as a mean to preventing the abuse of state resources? As a result, this paper will study the approved budgets and the differences that arise from year 2017- until now, and it will analyze the total spending or expenditures for the elections, given to CEC and to the electoral subjects. The methodology used here is the combination of qualitative methods, and by using primary and secondary sources of information from different international and national relevant institutions and the analysis of the public budgets, for the budgetary years of 2017-2024.

Internal Migration in Nepal: Resilience to Departure and Host Area

The present study aims to explain the current situation of internal migration and resilience. It is based on secondary sources of information. Mixed method is used to depict the complex scenario of inter-regional migration. Internal migration is a common phenomenon in Nepalese social history. It is generally attributed to poverty, low income, scarce fertile land, lack of opportunity, disparity of population distribution and resources. The unnatural flow of population from hilly to Tarai and rural to urban areas is an issue of study. Migration creates an unprecedented challenge to modern society. The resilience of society either to the host area or the place of departure being painful. The issue of mobility of the people generates disparities of population distribution and resources. Due to uncontrolled movement of people either temporarily or permanently, balanced social and cultural issues are being destroyed and several complexities are emerging. Ancient migration pattern was guided by the scarcity of food and security. Current migration issues are governed by the luxuries of life. Over pressure of population in Tarai and urban areas and dearth of people in hilly region creates havoc in life of both the places.

The strategic challenges of the decarbonisation of the manufacturing industry

The paper presents the problematic scope of decarbonisation of the heavy processing of the energy and carbon-intensive industry in relation to Polish conditions. The paper is part of the ongoing discussion of scientists and practitioners on the strategic challenges of the decarbonisation of industry in Poland. The paper is the result of conceptual research carried out on the basis of a review of secondary sources of information. In line with EU requirements, the industrial strategy must include a vision for 2050 decarbonisation. The ambitious “net zero” target – the prospect of zero CO2 emissions by 2050 – requires significant financial outlays and profound technological and organisational changes in many industries. The paper is an introduction to the discussion on the preparation of Polish industry for profound changes in decarbonisation.

Redundant co-training: Semi-supervised segmentation of medical images using informative redundancy

Pseudo-labeling, consistency regularization, and co-training are common paradigms for semi-supervised learning. In this paper, we propose a novel method based on co-training and pseudo-labeling for the semi-supervised segmentation of the left ventricle. Our co-training strategy is novel and unlike most previous works does not rely on using multiple-view datasets, performing weak/strong augmentations on the input images or perturbations on the networks. We proposed creating redundant labels by utilizing the provided ground-truths and training networks segmenting different overlapping regions corresponding to the created labels. Although the new labels seem to be redundant, we demonstrated that they provide valuable information to the networks. The predictions of the redundant networks (which are trained on the redundant labels) can be used in the pixels where the primary network’s predictions are not reliable. This enables extracting a secondary source of information without requiring any additional ground-truths. The common practice in pseudo-labeling is using the reliable predictions of the unlabeled data and discarding the unreliable ones. However, we proposed utilizing predictions from the redundant networks to generate pseudo-labels for the unreliable pixels in the primary network’s predictions, rather than simply discarding them. We validated our method on two left ventricle segmentation datasets, and it surpassed the state-of-the-art semi-supervised learning approaches. Furthermore, we conducted extensive studies to analyze the proposed method from different aspects. Implementation of our work is available at https://github.com/behnam-rahmati/redundant-cotraining.

The social construction of anti-tourism protest in tourist cities: a case study of Barcelona

Purpose Focusing on critical discourse analysis, this paper aims to propose a framework for analysing the way activist anti-tourism groups construct their social action of protest. The authors argue that activist groups use different narrative strategies to construct and legitimise their discourse of protest to convey social meanings for social action practices. This study represents an attempt to explain how anti-tourism activist groups have the agency to build different paradigms of protest rooted in particular views of tourism. Design/methodology/approach As a result of the lack of research in this area, this study used a comparative case study methodology drawn on four case studies in the field of anti-tourism protest. Case study is deemed adequate to explore a complex social phenomenon, how activist groups differ from each other, in a specific socio-economic context. A critical discourse analysis method is used to study primary (interviews) and secondary sources (reports, websites and online campaigns documents) of information, which express the activist group motivations and objectives to protest against tourism. Findings This study’s findings provide evidence in how discourse differs among the protest groups. Three narrative paradigms of protest are identified, which guide their agency: scepticism, based on a global and ecological approach; non-interventionist transformation, rooted in local community issues; and direct transformation, based on a sectoral problem-solving approach. These differences are interpreted as the consequences of the emergence and the development of different paths of protest according to specific social contexts and power relations in which anti-tourism groups are embedded. Originality/value This paper provides a contemporary approach to anti-tourism activism within the context of social movements. This case study may be of interest to practitioners and international destination managers interested in gaining a better understanding of anti-tourism protest strategies, new anti-tourism narratives following COVID-19 and the opportunities and challenges for opening a dialogue with those involved in activism and social urban movements as part of sustainable tourism governance. Our results can also help activists to rethink how they integrate differences and particular strategic positions to avoid hindering collective action. This knowledge is especially useful for managers and authorities seeking to develop more accurate collaborative governance practices with local activists, and especially those interested in fostering participative action without marginalising the diverse range of local community perspectives.

Environmental Change in Coastal Region of West Bengal: A District Level Study

The 21st century experiences a rapid pace of urbanization in the world and especially in the developing countries like- India. More than half of the world's population lives in cities and towns that symbolize the unprecedented growth of urbanization. This very urbanization is coupled with social, economic, spatial and environmental impacts and challenges. Though higher rate of urbanization seems to be positive sign for economic development and overall prosperity of the regions. Contemporary urbanization in developing regions means inadequate basic infrastructural amenities, substandard housing, overcrowding, depletion of green spaces, inadequate transport facilities, and non-compliance with building bye-laws and planning regulations. This leads to multiple and serious environmental problems in the form of pollution, deforestation, wet land destruction, erosion and flooding, urban sprawl, slums and squatter settlements, and aesthetic degradation which all have adverse impacts on human's well-being. Similar kinds of impacts are visible not only in the interior parts of the country but also in the coastal zones where urban places are facing multiple challenges and ecological crisis as well. The present study focuses on the development and environment in the coastal region (including districts East Medinipur and South 24-Parganas) of West Bengal, a state with 31.87 percent level of urbanization as per Census of India 2011. Since this study is in preliminary phase, there has been made an attempt to provide an overview on the quality of life and environmental conditions in the coastal region. Present study is based on secondary source of data and information, and tries to address the following objectives: a) to examine the urbanization- environment relationships and its consequences in the coastal areas, and b) to identify and explore the emerging issue areas and concerns in the coastal region of the state.

Student’s Science Literacy in Science Learning at Elementary School

This study aims to describe literacy in science learning in elementary schools. This study uses a type of qualitative research. This research was conducted at SDN 1 Karangsari which is located in Karangsari Village, Kec. Rowosari, Kab. Kendal, Prov. Central Java with postal code 51354. This analysis makes use of both primary and secondary sources of information. Interviews, observations, and field notes are all tools used in data collection. Methods for gathering data, reducing it, presenting it, and drawing conclusions from it. Use data triangulation to verify the accuracy of your findings. The conclusion of this study is that scientific literacy in science learning at SDN 1 Karangsari has been instilled. With reference to indicators, identify and explain scientifically valid phenomena (about blood circulation), evaluate and design investigations (about the properties of light), interpret data and conclusions based on scientific evidence (about the occurrence of rainbows).

This case examines different business-level strategic options that could help Tesla drive in the fast lane in India. Complexity academic level The case can be used in international strategy course at graduate level. It can also be used in a session on international marketing in marketing management course.

OPINION OF GENERATION Y - HAS NORTH MACEDONIA SUCCESSFULLY DEALT WITH THE TOURISM CRISIS 2020-2022?

Crisis events represent a costly threat to businesses in the tourism sector. Tourism companies have long recognized the importance of crisis management and realized that their passive attitude toward possible crises can negatively affect their work. Despite this knowledge, many of them are not prepared for a quick response and do not have mechanisms that can indicate that danger early. For those reasons, the need to write this paper arose, intending to provide tourism enterprises with an appropriate tool for successfully fighting against crises. This paper's main goal was to determine the opinion of Generation Y about "Were we able to deal with the crisis in the tourism sector in the Republic of North Macedonia in the period 2020-2022?". For this purpose, the authors did narrative research using secondary sources of information and empirical research about the problem. After processing the data and their visualization through tables and graphs, based on the results of the empirical research, the authors presented their conclusions and recommendations for appropriate actions in dealing with the crises encountered by the enterprises that belong to the tourism sector.

Anthropological Symbolic Significance of the Number ‘Three’: A Case of Selected Languages and Cultures in Zambia

This paper problematizes the symbolic significance of the number ‘three’ in Zambian culture and society. The paper aims to highlight the pragmatic implicature of the number ‘three’ conveyed by different cultures and languages in Zambia. The study used a qualitative approach. Data were collected through elicitation by conducting unstructured interviews as well as document analysis. Primary data were collected from 33 respondents who were selected purposively to represent six cultures from five provinces of Zambia. Primary data were justified by secondary sources of information. Phenomenology theoretical locale was chosen to underpin the study. The study reveals that there is a significant value in numerology such as the arithmetic number ‘three’. The number ‘three’ is highly interpreted in both Biblical and cultural contexts and can be used to preserve indigenous knowledge for future generations. Anthropologically, the number ‘three’ is used to teach, admonish, counsel, reconcile, and unify people such as families, churches, and marriages. It can be concluded that the anthropological symbolic significance of the number ‘three’ bears some commonalities in the Zambian culture and the sample languages, and has minor pragmatic variations.

Diferencias regionales de la disolución conyugal por divorcio y separación en el norte de México

This is a descriptive socio-demographic study of the marital dissolution by divorce and separation in the northern border region of Mexico. The objective is to provide a general view of the level of this type of dissolutions in the region and some of its differences among the federal entities that form it. For this purpose, we use information from the National Survey of the Demographic Dynamics 2018 (ENADID) and secondary sources of information. The analysis is based on the indicators about the dissolution of the first conjugal union of ever-married women that were calculated through the life table technique and logistic regression models. The results evidence that the northern region has one of the highest levels of marital dissolution in the country, but with interesting differences between the states located in the northwest and the northeast generating a dual pattern in the region. divorce, marital dissolution, family instability, northern border, Mexico

Tinjauan Pengaruh Strategi Penetapan Harga pada Pembelian Barang Melalui Bisnis Digital

The study tested the price influence of the purchasing strategy of consumer goods. Also what was studied in this study was the influence of the internet (online presence) on informed purchasing decisions. The research is meant to answer the question of how much the price of a competitor affects the purchase of a product, how customers understand the concept of pricing based on the company's value, and how much online prices inform customer purchasing decisions. This paper is descriptive and historical and relies heavily on secondary sources of information. The findings from the data obtained suggest that consumers have a perception of value reflected in the price of the company's products. It also shows that the price of the competitor affects the purchase of the company's products and the online price informs and influences the purchase decision. This study contributes to knowledge on a range of issues related to price strategy and purchase decision-making processes. This research recommends that companies should focus on communicating customer value through price, companies should also pay attention to competitor prices and check how price affects their product purchase.

EMPIRICAL STUDY ON ADOPTION OF GREEN BANKING PRACTICES IN COMMERCIAL BANKS

Indian banks are eagerly anticipating initiatives in the green banking space, which is gaining popularity throughout the world. India aspires to join the ranks of Green Banking greats like the United States, Japan, Australia, etc. When it comes down to it, "Green Banking Products" are financial services whose main goal is green energy conservation. Finding out what's happening now, how users are aware of green banking practices, how customers perceive and favor these activities, and where the study may be improved upon are the main goals of the research. The research made use of both original and secondary sources of information. The data collection method chosen was Non-Probability Convenience Sampling. The results show that, in the current climate, green banking is crucial, according to most customers. The percentage of people using green banking products, such as ATMs and mobile banking services, exceeded 90% of the total. Green banking measures implemented by both public and private sector banks are well-known to nearly all customers. On a related note, it's safe to say that customers have learned about green banking through word of mouth and bank websites, rather than through print ads or television and online commercials, have major impact. In light of the present situation, the majority of the customers consider it necessary.

Rural Women Entrepreneurship in South Africa: Issues and Challenges

Despite its importance in rural development, women’s entrepreneurship has faced a series of problems in South Africa. For a holistic assessment of such problems, through a literature review approach, this study aims to review prior research on women entrepreneurship, with a focus on the issues and challenges surrounding rural women entrepreneurship in South Africa. Secondary information sources, such as journal articles, theses, books, abstracts, and credible business-affiliated websites, were used to conduct the review. Among the results emerging from the study, some of the key challenges facing South African rural women entrepreneurs include a lack of adequate financing, education and training, gender bias, inadequate business skills, and difficulties in balancing between family and business. In view of these challenges, this study recommends capacity-building programmes, a robust government policy framework, and opening wider channels of funding and awareness to foster entrepreneurial activities among rural women entrepreneurs in South Africa.

Pastoral Sociology and Development Paradigm in Nepal

The main objective of this study is to dissect development from the prospective of pastoral sociology. Pastoral Sociology plays a vital part to understand the problems and results of pastoral society especially for the developing country like Nepal. The study reveals that because of the significance of pastoral sociology the literacy and tutoring of sociology has been started in Nepal. Now in present days, institute of husbandry, institute of forestry, irrigation systems etc has been enforced in the name of pastoral sociology. There is the great part of pastoral sociologist in poverty elevation fund, planning commission, pastoral megacity, department of road and original development training center. The policy makers, political leaders, development workers should give emphasis on the literacy, tutoring and new inquiries on pastoral sociology with connecting the development. Teaching the farmers about the products appropriate in the particular farms based on the quality of soil across Nepal can help the country to develop economically and ultimately it leads every concerned one to become independent financially by exporting the local products to the most promising markets at home and beyond. The possibility of commercial agriculture can amplify the possibility of economic growth. Therefore, the interconnection between these aspects must be comprehensively understood and for this government of Nepal must take initiatives.
